Five things a small business website needs before anyone talks about design

Structure, one next action per page, real facts, a privacy notice and fast hosting. The unglamorous parts that decide whether a site brings in work.

Design is the part everyone wants to discuss. It is rarely the part that decides whether a website brings in work. These five come first, and the factory treats them as the job rather than the finishing touches.

1. A structure a visitor can predict

Home, the services, how it works, who you are, how to get in touch. A visitor should never wonder where something lives. Pages that earn their place; nothing added to look bigger.

2. One next action on every page

Each page exists to help a visitor do one thing: request a visit, order a cake, book a call. That action is visible without scrolling, phrased in the words the business uses, and it works on a phone, where most first visits happen.

3. Facts, not placeholders

"Opening hours: TBC" costs more trust than leaving the line out. A site should say what is true and stay quiet about what is not yet known. Ermaz builds to this rule and hands you the list of what it could not say, so the gaps get filled with real answers.

4. A privacy notice written for your visitors

If a form collects a name and a phone number, the site needs to say what happens to them, in plain language, in the visitor's language. It is a legal requirement in the UK and the EU, and it is also simple courtesy.

5. Hosting that is fast and stays up

A site that takes four seconds to load on a phone loses the visitor before the first line. Static pages, served from a content network with HTTPS, load in well under a second and have nothing to patch. That is how every Ermaz site is hosted, preview and launched alike.

Get these five right and the design has something to carry. Skip them and no amount of design rescues the site.

How the factory treats them

None of the five is optional in an Ermaz build. The structure and the next action come out of the production plan before a line of copy is written; the facts rule is enforced by a check against the brief; the privacy notice is written for every site in the visitor's language; and hosting is the same static, HTTPS, content-network setup for a seven-day preview as for a launched site. The design is chosen from several directions afterwards, which is the right order.
